Actor and Texas fan Matthew McConaughey angers Longhorns fans for throwing trash in loss to Georgia

Georgia took part in the duel with the then number 1 last weekend. 1 Texas as an underdog. But the Bulldogs proved they are still contenders by defeating the Longhorns 30-15 in Austin.

The referees threw a penalty flag that temporarily nullified an interception that was returned for a Texas touchdown late in the third quarter. Boos quickly rained down from the crowd at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium in Texas, and some fans threw water bottles and other trash onto the north end of the field.

The game was briefly postponed to give stadium staff time to clean up.

Earlier this week, star actor and Texas graduate Matthew McConaughey released a statement about the fan’s reaction to the call, calling trash disposal a “bogeyman.”

“First of all, you were rousing on Saturday night when we hosted Georgia. Bravo. Let’s move on. Even though our Horns didn’t get the W, they gained a measurable home-field advantage,” McConaughey wrote.

“But let’s look at the bottle bomb we had. Not cool. Bogey move. Yes, that call was bullshit, but we are better than that. Longhorn Nation knows how to show up like no one else can and still keep our class. So let’s clean up this kind of nonsense in the future and put this behind us for good.

Before play resumed, the officials decided to raise the flag and announced that there was no foul for pass interference against Texas.

The university condemned the fan’s actions.

“This type of behavior will not be tolerated,” said a joint statement from CEO Kevin Eltife, president Jay Hartzell and athletic director Chris Del Conte. “We are committed to creating a positive environment for all participants, teams, officials and fans and we will take action to ensure this type of behavior does not occur again.”

The Southeastern Conference agreed with the arbitrator’s decision to overturn their original decision.

“The match officials gathered to discuss the play allowed to ensure the correct penalty was enforced. At that point, the called referee reported that he was in error and a foul for defensive pass interference should not have been called,” the conference statement said.

Debris on Texas Field

The SEC later announced that Texas had been fined $250,000 because the game stoppage violated sportsmanship, game management and alcohol policies.

“Although the original evaluation and adjudication of the penalty was not properly carried out, it is unacceptable for debris to be thrown onto the field at any time,” the conference said.

Texas must also work to identify and suspend fans who were responsible for throwing debris onto the field. The university’s alcohol policy will also be reviewed.

“The throwing of debris and resulting disruption of play that occurred Saturday evening cannot be part of an SEC event,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. “The SEC is delegated by its members the responsibility to enforce its sports and game management policies, and these actions are consistent with that oversight responsibility, including financial penalties and mandatory reviews.”
