Former President Donald Trump this summer offered adult film star Stormy Daniels a financial incentive if she agreed to keep quiet about Trump — including the relationship that became the focus of the hush-money payments that ultimately became the subject of a New York criminal case. ahead of the November election, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reported Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Daniels delivered sensational testimony about hush money payments she received from Trump before the 2016 election. She was paid to keep quiet about an affair between the two, a relationship he has denied. The jury convicted Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to the payments.

In a separate case from the hush money trial, Daniels was ordered to pay Trump’s legal fees after she lost a defamation lawsuit filed against him. About two months after the hush money trial, Trump’s lawyer told Daniels’ representative that the former president would agree to a smaller payment if she agreed not to make derogatory comments about Trump.

“We do not agree that a payment of $620,000 would fully satisfy the three judgments,” Trump’s lawyers said in a letter Maddow received from Daniels’ attorney in July.

“However, we can agree to settle these matters for $620,000, provided your client agrees in writing to refrain from making any public or private statements related to alleged past interactions with President Trump or any defamatory or derogatory statements about him or his business.” and/or to give up any partners or his suitability as a presidential candidate,” the letter continues.

Daniels’ attorney rejected the suggestion, Maddow reported. Daniels’ lawyer told MSNBC that they ultimately settled on $627,500, but she did not agree to remain silent.

In a statement to MSNBC, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung falsely claimed that the documents Maddow was referring to “were obtained as part of an illegal, foreign hacking attack against President Trump and his team.”

“We are working with authorities to determine the legal consequences for those who are likely to commit federal crimes by publishing and using stolen material from opponents of the terror regime,” he continued. “MS. Daniels was held accountable for having to pay President Trump more than the money she owed him as a result of her wrongdoings.”

MSNBC obtained the documents from Daniels’ attorney, not through a hacker attack.

In May, Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments to Daniels. The historic conviction marked the first time a former president was found guilty of a crime.

Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen made payments to Daniels in the final stretch of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump then reimbursed Cohen for the payments and listed them as legal fees in business filings. Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in the case next month.
