Accident causes release of hazardous substances near Rochester

UPDATE – 08/28/24, 10:12 p.m.:

The Rochester Fire Department was dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a semi-trailer rollover near the intersection of Interstate 90 and Highway 52, according to a news release from Rochester Deputy Emergency Management Director Brett Knapp.

When emergency crews arrived, they found that the semi-trailer was carrying several containers marked with hazardous materials signs, some of which were leaking.

To ensure public safety, an isolation distance of 300 feet in all directions was initially established.

The RFD Chemical Assessment Team from Fire Station 4 was called to assist with the incident.

Firefighters on site wore protective clothing and used monitors to assess the spread of gases or other hazards, such as flammability.

The driver of the semi-trailer was able to exit the vehicle under his own power. His medical condition was evaluated but he was not taken to the hospital.

Monitoring efforts revealed that the hazardous substances did not pose a major threat to the public either on the ground or in the air.

Crews are currently still on site awaiting the arrival of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and private cleanup companies to handle the situation.

Highway 52 exit 218 is closed and a detour has been put in place.

Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the accident. No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Assisting agencies include the State Patrol, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service, Rochester Emergency Management and Olmsted Emergency Management.
