AC energy costs reduced by 50% thanks to repurposed spacecraft technology

At a time when global temperatures are rising rapidly and the need for air conditioning is also increasing sharply, a Houston-based company has introduced technology to dramatically reduce the energy consumption of existing air conditioning systems.

This will help combat greenhouse gas emissions since most of the energy will not come from renewable sources.

The method repurposed by Helix Earth Technologies was actually developed by company CEO Rawand Rasheed and his team when he was at NASA. The technology was originally developed to filter air in spacecraft.

Device reduces power consumption by 50%

The device, called Helix Micra, pre-dehumidifies the incoming air, significantly reducing the load on the existing equipment and reducing power requirements by 50%. According to the company, there is no need to replace or modify existing equipment.

No heavy lifting equipment is required.

Rasheed claims the Helix Micra system is six to eight times more efficient than other commercially available dehumidification systems, is much smaller than current systems and the filters are easy to manufacture using 3D printing, which can be done with recycled materials, reported New Atlas.

Additional structural support for the roofs is not necessary, the company said.

The Helix Micra device can be serviced in just a few minutes

Imagine if a technician could add a device in just a few hours that could easily connect to virtually any existing AC rooftop unit (RTU) or dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS), the company said.

According to the company, the Helix Micra unit can be serviced within minutes as part of your air conditioning maintenance.

Groundbreaking HVAC retrofit unit delivers unmatched efficiency

The groundbreaking HVAC retrofit device delivers unmatched efficiency and energy savings to existing air conditioning systems. The device is said to be a game changer for those paying commercial property utilities and purchasing equipment.

Adding Helix products is a great choice for both retrofits and replacements.

The company has not provided specific pricing for the units as they need to be customized for different systems, but the unit is expected to last for about 15 to 20 years. The company claims that the unit will pay for itself within three years.

Helix Earth Technologies initially focuses on the Texas market

Before expanding the product’s availability to the U.S. and the world, the company will first focus on the Texas market.

Designed with no moving parts, Helix Micra units capture micron-sized water droplets that are sprayed onto spacecraft to fight catastrophic fires. This feature makes the unit suitable for pre-dehumidifying air delivered to a rooftop air conditioning system.
