Aaron Rodgers says Mike Williams took the wrong route for late-game interception

For the second straight year, quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets offense dominated the football and had a chance to win the game in the final minutes.

And for the second straight day, receiver Mike Williams slipped while trying to make a catch and a defensive back intercepted the pass, handing the Jets a loss.

On third-and-16 from the Jets’ 40-yard line, Rodgers attempted to throw a deep pass to Williams down the sideline. But Rodgers underthrew the pass, causing Williams to slip and Buffalo Bills cornerback Taron Johnson to make a diving catch for the interception.

Rodgers told the media after the Jets’ 23-20 loss that there was a miscommunication on the route Williams was running.

“It’s two vertical (routes),” Rodgers told the media after the game. “Allen (Lazard) is on the edge of the seam and Mike is on the edge of the red line. I look at Allen, he raises his hand and three guys walk with him. So I throw a no-look at the red line. And when I look there, (Williams) runs an in-breaker.

“He has to be on the red line.”

The “red line” Rodgers is referring to is likely the red stripe that many NFL teams paint on their practice fields just a few feet from the sideline to help receivers with their routes.

Rodgers stated that he believed Williams was running down the “red line” near the sideline and not breaking in that direction, which would result in his missed throw.

On the night, Rodgers threw for 294 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 23 of 35 passes – good for a 99.0 passer rating. Williams, meanwhile, was unable to catch any of his three goals, and the Jets’ comeback campaign was again halted by an interception, just as it was in New York’s 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week in London.

The Jets, now 2-4, will return to the field Sunday night for another primetime matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
