A24’s Oscar-winning multiverse film leaves its streaming home this month

The successful A24 film Everything everywhere at once is leaving Netflix. The film will leave the streamer’s universe on 22.August.




A24’s most successful film is leaving Netflix’s streaming service this month. Directed and written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the production is by the Russo Brothers. Everything everywhere at once tells the story of Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh), a middle-aged Chinese woman who runs a laundromat with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu). When the laundromat is audited by the IRS, Evelyn discovers the existence of the multiverse and the different versions of herself that exist within it. By absorbing the abilities of her parallel selves, she must defeat Alpha Joy, who plans to use the power of the “Everything Bagel” to destroy the entire multiverse.

The Daniels’ Oscar-winning work, Everything Everywhere All At Once, reflects the unique nature of the avid comic book collector who reads one issue after another.


The idea for the film came about in 2010 when writers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert began researching the topic of the multiverse. After originally writing the script with Jackie Chan in mind as the protagonist, the pair decided to switch to a female protagonist instead and started with actress Michelle Yeoh in mind instead. After casting was finalized, filming on the film began in January 2020 and wrapped two months later in March, just before Covid lockdowns began in America. The film premiered two years later at South by Southwest and was released in theaters by A24 in April.



Everything everywhere at once was a great success

Everything everywhere at once would go on to be a critical and box office success, becoming A24’s highest-grossing film with a worldwide gross of $143.4 million. The film won several Oscars, including:

  • Best Actress (Yeoh)
  • Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Quan)
  • Best Director
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best editing

The film also helped revive Ke Huy Quan’s acting career after he retired in 2002. He was set to play prominent roles in the Disney+ series Loki And Kung Fu Panda 4.

Everything everywhere at once leaves Netflix on August 22nd.
