A woman was killed and a child was injured in a crash in Baton Rouge, deputies said

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash that left one person dead and another injured on Wednesday, October 9th.

Officers were called to the intersection of Highland Road and Pecue Lane around 1:50 a.m

“According to statements, a truck was traveling west on Highland Road when a vehicle swerved in front of the truck and a collision was unavoidable,” EBRSO said.

The driver of the car, Valencia Joquawn Jones, 24, died at the scene and her young child suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital, according to EBRSO.

Emergency medical services officials confirmed they had transported one person to hospital.

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

“Based on the evidence, impairment of the truck driver is not suspected at this time,” EBRSO said.

The investigation is ongoing and further information will be shared as it becomes available.
