Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the trial of Brian Steven Smith, who is accused of killing two women and videotaping one of the murders.

Authorities accuse Smith, 52, of killing 30-year-old Kathleen J. Henry in September 2019 and 52-year-old Veronica Abouchuk in 2017 or 2018. Both are Alaska Natives.

Smith became a suspect after a woman who was on a “date” with the suspected killer stole a digital memory card from his car that allegedly contained photos and videos of Henry’s murder, which took place at a Marriott hotel in Anchorage, police said, according to the Associated Press. The woman then turned the memory card over to police.

“Everyone always dies in my movies,” says the voice in one of the videos, according to AP. “What will my followers think of me? People need to know when they’re going to suffer serial killings.”

The memory card had the word “murder” written on it, the woman told police, according to an affidavit in the criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.

Investigators launched an investigation and discovered that the card contained 39 images and 12 videos, according to the complaint.

The gruesome images show a woman lying naked on the floor next to a bed. Her left eye is injured and swollen shut, and she has red scars on her neck, the indictment says.

In one of the videos, “the person filming was hitting and choking the woman with his right hand around the neck,” the complaint said. “The woman was moaning and struggling to breathe.”

According to the complaint, police believed the suspect had an English-sounding accent, and after investigators reviewed the videos and images, “they recalled a man with an accent named Brian Smith from a previous investigation.”

Investigators found that Smith, a South African immigrant, allegedly stayed at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott from September 2 to 4, 2019.

Henry’s remains were found on October 2 near a highway south of Anchorage.

After Smith was taken into custody, he allegedly told police about the murder of Abouchuk, the Anchorage Daily News was reported citing authorities.

Abouchuk’s remains were discovered near an old power plant in Eklutna, Alaska News Source.

“Without prompting, he tells the cops in the bathroom, ‘I’m going to make you famous,'” District Attorney Brittany Dunlop alleged at a hearing last week, according to the AP. “He comes back and says… ‘Do you have some time? Do you want to keep talking?’ And then he reveals this other murder.”

Smith has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer could not be reached for comment.

The trial is expected to take three to four weeks in Anchorage.
