A thin wireless magnetic phone charger that works as advertised

Since I had to upgrade from a great OnePlus Android phone to an iPhone for various reasons, I was abruptly reminded of how long Apple products take to charge. My OnePlus quickly charged from 0 to 100 percent in about half an hour. The iPhone? Several hours.

And because the battery seems to drain super fast, I constantly charge the iPhone whenever possible. But timing is everything, right? A few weeks ago, it was suggested to me to try AquaVault Portable Wireless Magnetic ChargeCard Charger that’s super thin and attaches magnetically to the back of any phone that can charge wirelessly. So I ordered one. I tried the brand’s original ChargeCard almost two years ago and loved it. It’s my go-to “charging brick” for road trips because it’s so portable and thin, easy to store, and charges my phone pretty quickly.

Like the original, this new version requires no cables and is more than twice as powerful as the original – with 5,000mAh compared to 2,300mAh for its predecessor. This version is just 0.3 inches thick and is about the size of a credit card at 3.75 x 2.5 inches. Total weight: 3.5 ounces. Plus, it’s made from high-quality, laser-engraved stainless steel.

It comes with a charging cable so you can charge it up easily. But unlike the original, which had the actual cable cleverly tucked away, this one isn’t built in. A small price to pay for convenience, I guess.

To use this device, simply hold it to the back of most iPhone 12-15 series phones, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, or other Qi-enabled phones. It will instantly snap to the back of the phone and begin charging. You do have to press the power button, but on my phone it just turned on by itself. If you have a phone that charges wirelessly but isn’t MagSafe compatible, simply stick the included ring to the back of your phone and everything will work seamlessly from that point on.

In my case, it works well. But I find that the magnetic connection between the charger and the back of my phone is a bit weak. The charger itself also gets hot pretty quickly when in use. I have a thin case for my phone, and although the ChargeCard works through it, the magnetic connection is very weak. So I just remove the case when I want to use the charger. Charging is relatively fast, with up to 20W maximum power thanks to the charger’s adaptive IC board. You can also use the built-in USB-C and Lightning input/output ports if needed. The device has LED indicators that light up to show you the remaining power and charging status as well.

I could see this being a nice Christmas present, especially if you’re giving it to someone who travels a lot. Technically, it’ll probably fit in a foldable wallet, although I think it’s a bit thick to fit comfortably. But it fits easily in the pocket of a suitcase and takes up next to no space. I’m still waiting for a solar-powered phone that doesn’t need a charger. But until then, this charger is more than sufficient.
