A potential Lakers trade target could be off the table

Most people agree that the Los Angeles Lakers need to make at least one trade this season to go from a playoff team to a championship contender. They lack two-way players, especially at the wing position, and need another legitimate defensive center.

They reportedly had several trade targets with an eye on acquiring another center, including Jonas Valanciunas, who turned down the Lakers’ free agency offer this summer to join the terrible Washington Wizards, and Wendell Carter Jr. from the Orlando Magic.

Some Lakers fans felt that Carter, who can rebound, block shots and occasionally hit three-pointers, could be a game-changer for the team. But now he has agreed to a contract extension to stay in Orlando.

About ESPN:

“Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Jr. has agreed to a three-year, $59 million contract extension,” his agent Mike Miller of LIFT Sports Management told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday night.

“Carter is now under contract with the Magic through the 2028-29 season and will receive a combined $82 million, including the two remaining years of his current contract.”

In six NBA seasons, Carter, who is 6-foot-3 and 270 pounds, has averaged 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocked shots in 27.6 minutes per game. He recently added a reliable 3-point shot to his game and last season he hit 37.4% of his 3-point attempts.

Instead of potentially adding to the Lakers’ roster, he will continue to contribute to a Magic team that could be a rising force in the Eastern Conference.
