A look at voter turnout at polling stations in Metro Detroit

WARREN, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – The polling station at the Butcher Educational Center in Warren was extremely busy during the 2020 presidential election, but it’s different than this year.

Thanks to historic early voting numbers in Warren, Macomb County and Michigan, the line was stable but not busy.

Voters and poll workers CBS News Detroit spoke with acknowledged the stress of the day but are looking forward to participating in the election.

“Go with your heart,” voter Jason Middleton said. “Whatever you think is better. Simply. Correct?”

Michigan voters voice their thoughts Tuesday.

“All elections are important, and of course this is a big deal,” said Elections Director Jennifer Jenkins. “Everyone is happy to be here. Good vibes everywhere.”

Voters from three counties cast their ballots around the Butcher Educational Center in Warren.

This location is monitored by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to monitor any voting rights violations. The department is tracking 86 locations nationwide, including six in Michigan.

Jamarr Durhal said he wants a candidate who will move the trend in Detroit in the right direction.

“This is a situation where I’m noticing a lot more people wanting to vote, especially in the city as it’s evolving into something much better than before,” Durhal said. “Everyone wants to do their part and everyone wants to be part of something special.

Voter Breanne Neal is ready for something special. She said she was tired of the political advertising, rallies and rhetoric.

“I think the truth is always somewhere in the middle, and I just, more importantly, want our parents to speak up in our communities for what they want for our children in the future and represent those values,” Neal said.

Jenkins said it was a comfortable environment for voters.

“Everyone out here has been polite and respectful, and we expect nothing less,” Jenkins said. “There’s a really good vibe so far today and I expect it to stay that way until the polls close.”

Polling stations close on Tuesday at 8 p.m. local time.
