A hot meal now costs extra on a transatlantic JetBlue flight

JetBlue is making a big change to its transatlantic flight offering. CNN (WBD) reports that the company’s “core fares” for flights to Europe and the United Kingdom will no longer include hot meals.

“All food is served chilled,” says menus for both eastbound and westbound flights, whether breakfast, lunch or dinner. After testing hot food on its Basic Blue, Blue and Blue Extra services to Dublin, Ireland and Edinburgh, Scotland, the airline has changed its mind. From New York and Boston it also flies across the ocean to London, Paris and Amsterdam.

Ever since JetBlue Airways (JBLU) and Spirit Airlines (SAVE) called off their $3.8 billion merger earlier this year (after it was blocked by a judge on antitrust grounds), JetBlue has been trying to move past what CEO Joanna Geraghty has called a forerunner “three years of diversion” and finding a way forward as a separate entity.

It’s a difficult balance between cutting costs and potentially increasing revenue. Earlier this year, JetBlue eliminated carry-on baggage fees on its budget Basic Blue fares. In a statement provided to Quartz about the meals, JetBlue said, “This change is part of our effort to ensure we can continue to provide a great experience at JetBlue’s competitive fares on these routes.”

For foodies who feel compelled to upgrade their basic economy tickets, this subsection of the Transatlantic Travel Inflight Experience page points to the premium “Mint” menus, which include hot items such as a “Sicilian square slice” pizza, etc Chicken Picatta.
