A construction crane falls from a high-rise building in St. Petersburg during Hurricane Milton

A construction crane in downtown St. Petersburg toppled as Hurricane Milton swept through the city.

Video shows the crane on the ground surrounded by debris after it crashed to the ground at 400 Central Avenue.

According to the city, no one was injured in the collapse.

A witness told FOX 13 she believes it fell on the Tampa Bay Times building.

The crane fell from a building that had been under construction for about two years and would be the tallest building in St. Petersburg.

Earlier this week, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch said he was concerned about how the tower cranes would operate during Hurricane Milton, noting that specialized teams would need about a week of planning time to remove and reconnect the cranes dismantle as most of them are permanently installed.

City officials said St. Petersburg is in contact with developers who manage the cranes. However, due to the nature of the crane operation, lowering or securing a tower crane is planned weeks in advance and was not a viable option in the time frame of Hurricane Milton.

During storms, the tower cranes go into weather vane mode, making them safe up to gusts of about 100 miles per hour, but Hurricane Milton produced stronger winds.

The Category 3 hurricane hit Siesta Key on Wednesday evening. It was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane about two hours after making landfall and is expected to spread across the state Thursday morning.
