A confirmed tornado in WNY and record rain in Rochester

Rochester, NY (WHAM) – The work week ended with very changeable weather in WNY. Most of us experienced run-of-the-mill thunderstorms with heavy rain on Friday, but in one spot there was a tornado.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Buffalo, NY reported a local storm in Friendship, NY on Friday evening at around 9:46 p.m. The report stated that a thunderstorm had knocked down numerous trees.

Due to the damage, a storm investigation team was dispatched by the NWS. The team went to the scene and found that an EF-1 tornado touched down late Friday evening about 3 miles southeast of Friendship, NY.

As far as we know, no one was injured by the tornado, but numerous trees were downed along its 6-mile (9.6-kilometer) path.

The tornado had estimated maximum sustained winds of about 100 miles per hour and a path of about 200 yards (about two football fields). Fortunately, the storm weakened as it moved northeast last night.

Even if you missed the devastating storm in the south, you probably got plenty of rain.

In fact, Rochester set a daily record for rainfall on Friday. The previous rainfall record, set on September 6, was 1.35 inches and set in 1898. The rainfall recorded at the airport yesterday was 1.44 inches.

Another 0.55 inches of rain fell this morning, bringing the storm’s total rainfall to 1.99 inches. Prior to this heavy rain, the weather was very dry, so no significant flooding was observed in the Rochester area.

Some area observers measured more than 2 inches of rain. See more totals from area rain observers here.

The heavy rain has left the area churned up and we will only see a few isolated showers tonight and Sunday. In fact, Sunday should remain mostly dry in WNY. We can’t rule out an isolated shower. It will also be windy, which will help keep the area drier.

Some gusts will reach 40 mph on Sunday. It will feel more like October, with highs ranging from 60 to 18 degrees.

If you go to the Bills’ home opener against the Cardinals at 1 p.m. in Buffalo, the weather should be mostly dry but still a bit windy.

The cool air will slowly disappear as we start the working week. There will be a few showers on Monday and the high will be around 21 degrees. After Monday, the rest of the week looks dry and sunny, with temperatures rising again to above 27 degrees by Wednesday.
