Officials identify four victims of Apalachee High School shooting

Authorities have determined the identities of two 14-year-old students and two teachers who were gunned down in a gruesome massacre at a Georgia high school on Wednesday morning.

Teenagers Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo were killed along with math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie when suspected gunman Colt Gray, 14, opened fire at Apalachee High School around 10:30 a.m., authorities said during an evening news conference.

As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, Aspinwall also served as an assistant coach for the Winder school’s football team and as its defensive coordinator.

Eight students and a teacher previously identified as David Phenix were also injured in the massacre.

The nine injured are expected to survive, said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.

Gray was taken into custody shortly after he began firing an AR-15-style weapon and is expected to face charges as an adult.

“And I want to ask all Georgians and all Americans to continue to keep these families, these educators and these students in your thoughts and prayers,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said Wednesday evening.

“And we will provide whatever state resources are needed from now until they are no longer needed. To support this community and support this team behind me.”

Police said they are currently reviewing extensive evidence to search for a motive for the bloodshed.

But federal authorities said Gray was on the FBI’s radar more than a year before the shooting.

The office received several tips about threats to commit a school shooting in May 2023, which prompted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to question the boy and his father.

At the time, the authorities stated that there was insufficient suspicion to warrant an arrest or further action.
