Labor Day Weather in North Carolina | Severe storms will sweep through central North Carolina this holiday weekend

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – Rain played a major role in central North Carolina on Monday morning.

This comes after heavy thunderstorms late Sunday. ABC11 meteorologist Steve Stewart said the rain did not bring a high chance of severe storms and would clear the area by the afternoon.

A tree fell on Leadmine Road near Middlebrook Road, knocking down several power lines and leaving hundreds of people in the area without power.

Power has been restored and roads are reopened.

It will get better later. Last year, temperatures reached 37 degrees on Labor Day, but this year temperatures will be just above 27 degrees.

“With the cold front lingering to the northwest, it will be generally cloudy, muggy and wet,” Stewart said.

Severe storms occurred in some parts of the viewing area over Labor Day weekend.

A few severe thunderstorms moved through central North Carolina Sunday afternoon and evening as a cold front moved into the region. Raleigh-Durham International Airport saw record rainfall.

In some places, trees fell due to strong winds. In other areas, the streets were flooded.

A flash flood warning for Wake County was extended until 11 p.m., after which a flood warning remained in effect until 2 a.m.

As heavy storms passed through on Sunday, flooded streets and fallen trees could be seen throughout much of the spectator area.

A flash flood warning was also in effect for Durham, Granville and Orange counties for most of the evening.

Severe storms also hit Durham, Orange, Franklin and Wake counties on Friday afternoon. Between 2 and 5 p.m., the storms brought heavy rain, lots of lightning and strong wind gusts.

Several trees were downed and numerous fires broke out. One of these fires damaged three homes in northwest Raleigh.

outlook

A high pressure system moving across the northeast will bring cooler air; temperatures will be below average at just over 25 degrees.

Tuesday will be brighter and more pleasant with highs around 27 °C. Wednesday will be cloudy.

There is a chance of rain late Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning.
