A pit stop at a Hagerstown-area store resulted in a Texas truck driver having to make a return trip to Maryland – to claim a $50,000 Powerball prize.

According to the Maryland Lottery, the long-haul driver did not check the numbers on the Powerball tickets he purchased at the Pilot Travel Center west of Hagerstown until he had already traveled more than 1,700 miles.

Powerball rules require winners to redeem their winning tickets in the state in which they purchased the ticket.

The San Benito resident arranged another route through Maryland with his manager, this time taking his wife to accompany him to the Lottery Winner’s Circle at the Baltimore Lottery branch.

The Maryland Lottery allows winners to remain anonymous.

The winner lives near the southern tip of Texas, close to Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico.

He bought two Powerball tickets at the Pilot Travel Center on Greencastle Pike, also known as Md. 63. The store is near an interchange with Interstate 70.

The man had unloaded a load in Hagerstown and then stopped at the store to buy snacks and lottery tickets, according to the lottery authority.

A few weeks before this win, the same man matched four numbers on a Powerball ticket.

According to Powerball.com, matching four numbers will win you $100, while matching four numbers and the Powerball will win you $50,000.

The man told the lottery that he planned to put his big win into his retirement savings.

The estimated jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball drawing is $201 million, with a cash value of $100 million.
