Dichotomies: FSUs Toast โ€ฆ and Still Alive

Just two games into the college football season (as they also played in Week 0), Florida State is a broken team. Many thought this year would end with the Seminoles as ACC champions and a top-four seed in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. Last night’s humiliating home loss to Boston College made that future seem impossible.

And yet, technically speaking, it is not so. technically. Stay tuned:

  • At top speed, the Seminoles have reached a 0-2 record in conference games, but a spot in the ACC title game could still be up for grabs. Miami looked great, but Clemson got squashed, while other preseason favorites struggled as well. The Noles essentially need to top the standings in ACC play and get help, but if they win the conference, they’re in. Wild, right?
  • The new playoff format gives the top five conference champions automatic eligibility. An ACC title would certainly be enough for at least fifth place on this list, even if, say, a Mountain West or American team finishes the season with a higher ranking… which would mean a Group of 5 team would receive a first-round bye in the first playoff. A hilarious and plausible future lies ahead.

To be clear, FSU has looked really, really bad this year. Former five-star player DJ Uiagalelei looks lost at times and is woefully inaccurate, completing just 50 percent of his passes last night. The team seems so far removed from last year’s playoff form that it’s hard to imagine them winning. any Conference games at this pace.

  • We must also give Boston College the recognition it deserves and new head coach Bill O’Brien. (Yes, that Bill O’Brien.) It’s easy to forget what a good coach he is. BC pushed FSU around. That was impressive. The Eagles share first place in the ACC with Georgia Tech, who beat the Seminoles two weekends ago. A great club.

Again, welcome to our new reality. It’s a lot of fun. Here you can find our updated bracket projectionsAnd we have a fresh bubble watch also above.

Let’s continue:

Funny money: Juan Soto’s stunning free agent value

The athleteTim Britton has become an indispensable asset for forecasting contract values โ€‹โ€‹in the MLB, and today he attempted to do what seemed impossible until this point: figure out how big Juan Soto’s contract will be this offseason.

Before we get to the number, two comments from me:

  • Soto is one of the rarest free agents in recent history. Because of baseball’s draconian service-time rules, most players don’t reach lucrative free agency until age 28. Some teams, most notably the Braves, have gotten around this by signing top talent to big contracts early in their careers. But most don’t. Soto is only 25 and is already playing his seventh MLB season.
  • He is also one of the most talented batsmen we have ever seen. Baseball Reference’s picks for comparable careers at this age include Bryce Harper, Frank Robinson, Andruw Jones and Ken Griffey Jr. And Soto is having the best season of his career.

So, the number: 14 years, 560 million US dollars. This would essentially be the most valuable contract in MLB history, surpassing Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal this offseason, which is actually around $438 million when factoring in deferrals.

Tim’s whole story is worth reading this morningjust because of the amazing number crunching.

PS Would the Nats really try to get him back? Perhaps.

Chestnut breaks his own record
Super eater Joey Chestnut devoured 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes yesterday, a feat never accomplished by anyone in human history. The whole thing was shown on Netflix’s “Unfinished Beef,” a clever response to Chestnut’s previous banishment from Nathan’s Fourth of July event. Chestnut faced off against his only real rival, Takeru Kobayashi, who devoured 67 hot dogs, surpassing seven of Chestnut’s Nathan winning scores. It makes me sick just thinking about it.

Pearsall will miss at least 4 games after gunshot injury
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will begin the season on the reserve/non-football injured list, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the year. Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery over the weekend, but did not require surgery and was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon. Read our full update here.

Poll season, part 4: Are we still with the 49ers?

Chris Unger / Getty Images

Polls will continue through kickoff Thursday. Today, Mike Jones’ bold predictions for the NFL season inspired me to talk about one of the best — and most confusing — teams in the league: San Francisco. (Nothing to do with the Pearsall news.)

In his column, Mike predicts a Super Bowl hangover, a slow start in a league where โ€œit gets late early.โ€ But I want to be more specific.

Two things apply here: San Francisco has one of the most talented rosters in football and one of the smartest coaches in the league. The Niners have won the conference title each of the last three seasons and four of the last five. It’s just difficult to do something like this every year.

So the question is simple: Will the 49ers reach the NFC title game?

Make your voice heard here. We will add an official heart rate forecast to our list tomorrow.

๐Ÿ“บ MLB: Red Sox at Mets
7:10 p.m. ET on TBS
These are two teams in similar positions, both a little too far back in their divisions to catch up, and both just outside the wildcard race. That one makes a big difference.

๐Ÿ“บ WNBA: Sky at Aces
10:00 p.m. ET on NBA TV
This is a correction to yesterday’s newsletter where we incorrectly stated that the game was last night. It is tonight and will still be a great matchup, especially after A’ja Wilson scored 41 points on Sunday. That should put to rest any fears that they lose their grip on MVP.
