US Open 2024, day seven: De Minaur against Thompson, Haddad Maia beats Wozniacki, Medvedev easily gets through – live | US Open Tennis 2024

Now it is Haddad Maia who takes the lead in a short time and leads 6-2 2-4. and her coach is talking to her – apparently he hasn’t stopped the whole match. I think he’s telling her to relax, but whatever’s going on doesn’t seem to be fazing her, and as I write this, a poor swing volley puts her at 0-30. And thanks to another error from Wozniacki, she gets to 15-40… but an ace and a deep forehand to the sideline gets her in the deuce. It’s exciting, gripping stuff, and from there the twice-lost finalist serves out for a 5-3 lead in the second set.

Wozniacki gets a hold in the second set to make it 4-1 and is two games away from forcing a playoff.

So Wozniacki deserves another only to miss a backhand return as comms notice her difficulties in converting break points by advantage as Haddad Maia’s left serve goes wide to the backhand when attacking the front court. But a poor miss from the Brazilian, hitting the net with the court to aim at, offers her another chance and this time she prevents a… er… um… break for her opponent by hitting a double that illustrates a major turnaround at 6-2 1-3 in third court considering she was a set and a break up not so long ago.

Thanks, Will, and hello again everyone. This is a terrific match, Haddad Maia fighting to hold on 6-1 1-2. She’s not someone I completely trust under pressure and Wozniacki will want to make her play as many balls as possible… but watch for yourself! She plays a miserable drop but the answer is right there with her and she hits a lovely pass across the court for another break point… which is quickly intercepted with a forehand winner.

Well, it’s time for me to hand the floor back to Daniel Harris. Enjoy the rest of the action.

Wozniacki 2-6, 1-1 Haddad Maia* (denotes the server) Wozniacki earns two break points and uses her chances cleverly. Haddad Maia fends off the first with a cross-court shot from the right sideline. She follows up with a powerful ace and brings the game to deuce. But then she makes a double fault and gives Wozniacki another chance to break. Wozniacki shoots into the net, Haddad Maia hits too far and creates a fourth break point, and finally Wozniacki takes her chance.

Haddad Maia won the first set 6:2. Wozniacki gave her a scare in the last game, but the Brazilian kept her nerve and her serve to consolidate her lead.

Things are starting up again at both places. Everything seems to be fine.

We take the lead and deuce, Wozniacki misses six chances to break. But finally Haddad Maia scores and we are 1-1 in the first set. Meanwhile, at the Ashe tournament, Medvedev manages another break against Borges and wins the second set 6-1. I think he has a chance to win the set.

About Armstrong, Wozniacki and Haddad Maia are in the running and this feels like a very…descriptive duel. Wozniacki will keep the ball in play and try to create chances, while Haddad Maia – who broke in the first game and just fended off two break-back points in the second game – will look to score winners.

But then Medvedev manages to break to 6:1, 3:1, Borges just can’t get anything done. Jack Draper, on the other hand, has everything under control and now tells Eurosport that he has his emotions really well under control.

When asked what it was like to play tennis bravely on break points – some of which he played with a serve volley – he explained that he noticed that Machac was standing far back and facing Armstrong. The ball came through quickly and the shadow made it difficult.

He goes on to explain that he has only had three coaches and they have all been great with him. They all have his best interests at heart and that is hard to find in professional sports because there are a lot of people who are only looking out for their own benefit.

He’s had to deal with a lot of injuries over the last few years and he thinks about it a lot – he’s considered quitting the game – but here he is.

On television, Draper’s performance is extremely impressive and at 22, she just seemed so mature. We know he can serve and hit well, but he has to build the points, go for the winning points at the right time, stay calm under pressure and identify someone who could do so much more.
