“Dawson’s Creek” actor Obi Ndefo dies at the age of 51

Obi Ndefo, the actor best known for his role as Bodie Wells in Dawson’s Creek: The mysterious settinghas died, according to the family.

“I am heartbroken over the loss of my younger brother πŸ’” and know he has finally found peace β€οΈβ€πŸ©ΉπŸ•ŠοΈβœ¨,” Ndefo’s sister Nkem wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday. She did not initially provide any further details about Ndefo’s death.

Ndefo’s character on Dawson’s Creek: The mysterious setting was the boyfriend of the older sister of the main character Joey Potter and was often used in the series to draw attention to the racism experienced by black men in small town America. In addition to acting, Wells, a graduate of Yale drama school, was a writer and yoga instructor and volunteered for the nonprofit Arts Alliance for Humanity at the Santa Monica Playhouse.

Ndefo lost both his legs in 2019 when he was hit by a car while leaving a grocery store in Los Angeles. Despite the mental and physical stress, he remained resilient after the accident, documenting his recovery on social media and telling the Los Angeles Times Later that same year, he said he did not feel β€œan ounce” of anger toward the driver.

“What an example of pure, unfiltered love and tenacity you were as you faced life’s challenges,” actress Mary-Margaret Humes, who played Dawson Leery’s mother on the show, wrote in an Instagram tribute. “You always were and always will be a shining light.”

“There is a common thread to recovery and a common thread to love and joy,” Ndefo said on the All The Wiser podcast in 2021. “There is a return to love. It exists. It is always there.”
