Brownsville recognized as emerging high-tech metropolis – Rio Grande Guardian

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Secure Data Recovery has released a report titled “America’s Next Tech Hubs” – and Brownsville plays a major role in it.

The data for the report was based on technology growth between 2018 and 2023.

Looking at the top ten emerging high-tech metropolises, Brownsville came in second with a ranking of 8.2842.

The report’s author, Scott McMacken, said of Brownsville:

“The city’s proximity to international trade routes and a growing entrepreneurial spirit are driving Brownsville’s technology sector. It also has the largest job growth of any city analyzed, with a 125% increase in technology jobs since 2018.”

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen responded positively to the report.

“This is fantastic news for the City of Brownsville, which is recognized as one of America’s leading technology hubs and is experiencing remarkable growth in technology employment and wages, driven by SpaceX and our thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Cowen.

“Since 2018, we’ve seen a 125 percent increase in tech jobs, with over 900 positions added. This underscores the national trend of tech innovation moving to mid-sized cities with lower costs of living and competitive wages. Onward and upward! Congratulations, Brownsville and RGV.”

McMacken of Secure Data Recovery said these were the key findings from the report:

• Major emerging technology centers include Flint, Michigan; Brownsville, Texas; and Racine, Wisconsin.

• The 20 largest emerging hubs have created 19,020 technology jobs since 2018.

• The average weekly wage for the 20 largest hubs increased by $409, reaching $1,753 in 2023.

• Brownsville, Texas, had the highest employment growth, with a 125 percent increase and 929 new jobs created.

• Flint, MI, saw the largest wage increase, with a 114 percent increase to $2,044.

In his summary, McMacken wrote:

“Everyone knows about the big US technology hubs like Silicon Valley and New York City – you may even be tired of hearing about them. But just as the technology landscape is constantly evolving, so too are the places where that innovation is happening.

“As the cost of living in major technology centers skyrockets and tech jobs become increasingly scarce, small and mid-sized metropolitan areas across the U.S. are gradually emerging as America’s next emerging tech hubs.

“Many of these growing centers offer a rare combination of lower cost of living and high-quality technology salaries, creating tremendous opportunities for technology professionals.

“This growth is more than just good news for technologists; it can benefit entire communities, investments in local businesses and residents, and lead to opportunities far beyond the world of technology.

“To find the centers where the technology industry is quietly but exponentially growing, we analyzed Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment and wage data for the technology industry in 145 small and medium-sized U.S. cities.

“Just as new technologies can sometimes surprise us, some of the emerging U.S. tech hubs may also be quite unexpected. Find out which centers are the future tech capitals of American innovation and if you could live near one of these emerging tech hubs!”
