Bride begins wedding ceremony without her mother

Sticking to a schedule ensures that every part of the wedding day runs smoothly and in an organized manner. However, when one of the bride’s mothers failed to show up on time for her daughter’s ceremony, the best man decided to start the ceremony without her. After a heated argument broke out between the mother-daughter duo, the bride is now turning to Reddit to find out if her decision for the big day was unreasonable.

Key findings

  • Two hours before the ceremony began at 2 p.m., the bride’s mother went back to the hotel to get ready.
  • When 2 p.m. came, the bride’s mother still had not arrived and so the best man decided to start the ceremony without her.
  • Her mother finally arrived 45 minutes after the ceremony ended.
  • The bride told her mother that she was late, whereupon the bride’s mother came up with a series of excuses and blamed her daughter for being late.
  • Reddit sided with the bride, saying her mother’s decision was a power play to get back into the spotlight.

In a post on the Reddit subreddit “Am I the A——” on August 27, 2024, the bride explained that she spent the morning of her wedding day getting ready in her bridal suite to ensure she arrived on time for her 2 p.m. ceremony. At noon, the bride’s mother went back to her hotel room to change and pick up her grandmother and a family friend.

When it was 2pm, her mother was still nowhere to be seen, so she decided to start the ceremony without her. “Next, I’m walking down the aisle myself,” revealed the original poster. It wasn’t until 45 minutes after the service ended that the bride’s mother finally arrived. The bride told her mother that she had missed the ceremony and that “2 means 2,” especially because her minister had to perform another ceremony immediately afterward.

The bride’s mother did not take the news well and made up a series of excuses for why she had not shown up on time. “My mother immediately reacted with hostility, blaming the bakery because the buns were not ready. Then she said they were held up by a train,” the woman recalled. Later, the bride learned the truth: her mother took too long to get ready, but apparently found other external circumstances to blame. Instead of apologizing or taking responsibility, the mother blamed her daughter for being late. “It’s your fault for not calling or texting to ask where we were,” the bride recalled her mother’s response.

After Reddit asked for their opinion, the internet was quick to side with the bride. Some thought her mother’s late appearance was a power play, a deliberate maneuver to get back into the spotlight. “Your mother decided that HER appearance was more important than your wedding starting anywhere near on time,” one Redditor noted. Another agreed, saying, “Your mother has this idea that she is the absolute most important person and everyone should wait for her… Also, she is incredibly arrogant to expect the entire company to wait 45 minutes for her royal arrival.”

Others were shocked by her mother’s reaction and absolved the bride of any responsibility for her mother’s behavior. “She has nerve blaming you for being late,” one wrote. “I mean… what? That’s not how it works.”
