TV talk: “SEAL Team” starts final missions

Trib Total Media TV writer Rob Owen offers a TV tip for the coming week.

The former CBS drama “SEAL Team,” starring David Boreanaz as Navy SEAL team leader Jason Hayes, will stream the first episode of its seventh and final season on Paramount+ on August 11.

In a Zoom interview late last month, Boreanaz said he was ready to finish “SEAL Team” before the writers and actors went on strike last year.

“I knew I was done with the show, mentally,” he said. “My body was really battered and I felt like we had a great opportunity to come full circle with Jason and explore the whole issue of how to deal with your kills as an operator.”

When the season six finale aired in November 2022, Hayes became persona non grata with the leadership for speaking out against the war machine’s treatment of injured personnel.

“We find him in a kind of determination, along with other guys on the team, sitting around waiting in a holding pattern,” Boreanaz said. “We’re starting to peel the onion of that trauma, and that puts him on the sidelines for a couple of episodes in the beginning.”

Boreanaz said SEAL Team has always prided itself on the authenticity of its characters and their actions.

“The sacrifices they make for our country, that’s very important in the last part of the series and the finale,” he said. “It’s heartbreaking in a lot of ways and I think the audience will be a little shocked and ask themselves, ‘Why would they go down that path?’ (Our characters) are always vulnerable to not making it. That weighs heavily on Jason.”

In addition to starring in SEAL Team and serving as executive producer, Boreanaz also directed an episode about halfway through the season that focuses on the relationship between Jason and his son.

“It’s really about the influx of fentanyl and how dangerous that can be,” Boreanaz said. “It’s the beginning of a big story arc that kind of leads to the conclusion of the season. I love the episode I directed this year. Like all ‘SEAL Team’ episodes, it’s a fast-paced, wild adventure story.”

As for what’s next, the former “Angel” and “Bones” star said he “sold something to the studio and we’re excited about it, and there are other things going on.” He declined to name the studio or describe the project.

“Giving myself time is important for my balance and just to take care of myself,” Boreanaz said. “Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to see the things I planted two to three years ago bear the fruits of that labor, whether it’s a play or a series, independently releasing a film or getting involved as a producer or director. It’s an exciting time and I’m glad we’ve come to a conclusion.”
