The Paralympic Games: Sport for all as a means of inclusion and a driver for change

Sport has long been a catalyst for change, promoting inclusion and transforming societal attitudes. The Paralympic Games celebrate the extraordinary abilities of athletes with disabilities and underline the importance of equal access to sport for all. This principle is enshrined in the Council of Europe’s European Sports Charter, which underlines that universal access to sport, “sport for all”, is a fundamental human right.

By embodying a culture of inclusivity, Paralympic sport not only breaks down barriers but also serves as a powerful tool to combat discrimination and build a fairer society. It has the transformative power to shape perceptions and change lives, be it those of athletes, their supporters or the people it inspires.

In the words of Raymond Blondel, President of the European Paralympic Committee:

The Paralympic Games are the leading platform for promoting the values of inclusion and equal access to sport and society. They will once again demonstrate what can be achieved when people are given the right environment to play and compete, from local sports clubs to the international stage. Paralympians will shine again in Paris and their charisma will inspire people across Europe and beyond.

On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the Sports Department is presenting a series of testimonials from Paralympic athletes to demonstrate the value of access to sport as a universal human right.
