Almost record heat before storm threat

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest information on your complete ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! We’re expecting another hot day across the region. The highest temperatures today will again be in the northern half of the area, while southern and southeastern Kentucky will be a few degrees cooler. Temperatures of up to 35 degrees are possible in some places today, which is close to daily records.

A change to the forecast from today and the last two days. There is a Level 1 low-severe risk for areas north of I-64. Most of the storms will stay north of the Ohio River, but we can’t rule out the possibility of some of these storms reaching our northernmost counties. It’s a low threat, but it’s still there late in the day and into the evening hours. This will lead to another warm night with lows between 18 and 21 degrees.

Thursday could be the hottest day of the entire summer in many areas. Afternoon temperatures will rise to 35 to 40 degrees again, reaching the peak of this heatwave. There is also a slight chance of some sudden thunderstorms fueled by the heat and a little more humidity. However, most places will remain dry again.

Friday will be hot again, but the chance of thunderstorms increases late in the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon and evening. This could impact some high school football games across the region.

Rain chances increase Friday into Saturday as a cold front slowly moves into our area from the northwest. This will eventually bring us some cooler temperatures by next week. But first we still need to get through some scattered showers and thunderstorms to start the Labor Day weekend. The front will move into the Bluegrass areas on Saturday, increasing storm chances.

The exact timing of this front will affect our forecast for Saturday night’s Kentucky football game. A faster-moving front could bring us rain and thunderstorms during the midday and afternoon before dumping plenty of activity across Southern Kentucky in the evening hours. A slower-moving front would increase the chances of rain and thunderstorms at game time. Stay tuned for more updates on the UK football forecast.

This front will exit the region on Sunday, bringing us some lingering showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two. The cooler air won’t come through directly behind the front either. We’ll stay between 27 and 30 degrees on Sunday before a more refreshing feel sets in on Monday, Labor Day. Temperatures are expected to be near or below average for the first week of September. Most places will be between 25 and 27 degrees, with overnight lows between 15 and 16 degrees.
