Falling trees damage cars during storms

A severe thunderstorm that passed through Evanston shortly before 7 p.m. on Tuesday caused trees to fall in several places.

Two cars were damaged when a tree fell on Church Street east of Hinman Avenue, completely blocking the road.

This fallen tree blocked Judson Avenue between Church and Davis Streets, but did not appear to have damaged the house in front of it.

There were several other reports of fallen trees blocking roads, including on Sherman Avenue north of Foster Street and on Pratt Court and Maple Avenue north of Foster Street.

Due to the heavy storm, some streets east of the city center near the lakeshore were at least temporarily flooded.

At 7:40 p.m., ComEd reported outages near Leon Place and Ridge Avenue, as well as at a building on Church Street east of Orrington Avenue.

Overall, fewer than 60 customers were reported without power in Evanston. Overall, however, the utility reported more than 500 outages, affecting 32,000 customers across the system.

City spokeswoman Cynthia Vargas said residents should report downed power lines by calling 911 and fallen trees or other storm damage by calling 311. The 311 emergency call center will be open again Tuesday evening to take those calls.
