The Reddit user claimed that her brother told her she had to “give him my car until he could afford a new one,” but she ultimately decided against it.

A Reddit user is asking for a second opinion after deciding not to lend her car to her brother, which she says didn’t go over well with some family members.

In a recent post on the subreddit “AITA,” which translates to “Am I the Asshole,” a Reddit user named Scarlettspires claimed that she moved “down the street” from her job a few months ago so she no longer has to commute.

“I use my car a lot less than I used to, but still for grocery shopping, trips, visiting family, etc.,” said the Reddit user, who described herself as a 23-year-old woman.

In the post, she further claimed that the car her 26-year-old brother and his wife share “recently broke down beyond repair.”

“My brother told me I had to give him my car until he could afford a new one because he had to drive it to work. But it might be a year or two before he could afford a new car,” the Reddit user wrote.

The Reddit user claimed she “considered lending him her car” but decided against it because she “has a sick family member that I visit weekly to help with shopping and cleaning.”

“If I didn’t have my car, I wouldn’t be able to get by,” she wrote.

Additionally, the Reddit user noted that she lives “an hour away from family,” so the bus ride to them could take up to two hours without a car.

The Reddit user further claimed that some of her family members disagreed with her decision.

“Since I said no, my sister and dad have also said it was selfish of me not to give them my car,” she wrote, then asked, “Am I the a——?”

Several commenters defended the Reddit user and said that in their opinion she was not wrong.

“It’s your brother’s job to deal with his situation, not your job to fix everything for him. That was a ridiculous request from him,” one commenter wrote.

“Stick to your opinion,” added a second. “You can explain the reason exactly as you explained it in your question. It’s a valid reason and you don’t owe him anything. He’s an adult and should be able to figure it out himself.”

Numerous other replies focused on the so-called “claim” of the Reddit user’s brother.

“You don’t owe anyone your car. It’s sad that your brother is broke, but that’s not your problem,” read one response. “If he had asked if he could borrow your car for a while, that would be one thing (still a big ask), but this is going too far.”

Meanwhile, some commenters wrote that if their other family members were so upset about the incident, perhaps they should take action themselves.

“Tell your father and sister that one of them can give him your car if it is so important to them,” was one of the replies.
