Alexandria loses Del Ray Park to the Secret Service

Del Ray residents have one less park in their neighborhood to enjoy.

The Secret Service, which protects Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio) and his Del Ray estate, has cordoned off Judy Lowe Park, which borders Vance’s home.

Vance is currently largely engaged in a campaign with former President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election, but the Secret Service has expanded the security perimeter around Vance’s home.

Many Del Ray residents are unhappy with the closure of Judy Lowe Park. One resident even knitted a sign that read “Pro Vice President Kamala Harris” around a nearby telephone pole. Residents held a closure ceremony for the park yesterday.

No on-street parking is allowed in the residential block of E. Del Ray Avenue and on the east side of the 2200 block of Commonwealth Ave. While Alexandria residents are used to Secret Service agents in the area, lane closures for motorcades and helicopters in the sky, the long-term closure of a public facility is unusual.

The park was named after Judith Lowe, often referred to as the “First Lady of Del Ray.” She was a strong advocate for community involvement and fought to have the park eventually named after her. She died in 2011.
