Jackson County Legislature rejects sales tax to keep chiefs in county

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The Jackson County Legislature on Monday rejected a proposed quarter-cent sales tax estimate on capital improvements.

Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca supported the proposal, which he said was aimed at keeping the Chiefs in Jackson County.

The representatives voted 5 to 4 against the 20-year sales tax, which was supposed to raise $600 million.

The deadline for including the sales tax proposal in the November vote is Tuesday, August 27.

Abarca’s persistent attempt to pass a sales tax to finance improvements to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium was met with rejection.

Both Chiefs and Royals officials said they would explore all options after voters earlier this year rejected a sales tax proposal that would have fund improvements to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and a new downtown stadium for the Royals.

Visualizations have been released for a new Chiefs stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, but the team has not said whether it plans to stay in Jackson County or move to another location in the metropolis.

Another set of renderings for a downtown stadium was released Monday by a team of architects, real estate agents, lawyers and public relations professionals.

The group’s website states that the goal is to “conduct a thorough investigation to see if Washington Square Park can meet the goals of both the community and the Royals. This team includes 3D Development, BNIM Architects, Cushman Wakefield, Withers Brant and Highline Partners.”

KSHB 41 has reached out to the royals for comment. This story will be updated when a response is received.
