Residents were forced to evacuate their homes when a fire broke out near Antioch on Sunday morning, leaving significant damage to homes, fire officials said.

The Antioch Fire Department responded around 9:47 a.m. Sunday to a report of a structure fire in the 26100 block of West Marie Place in the unincorporated community of Antioch.

Antioch Fire Department Lt. Raeanne Fisher said when crews arrived they found an active fire in a two-story single-family home.

Smoke was rising from the front of the building and flames were coming from the back, Fisher said.

Due to the extent of the fire, the incident was upgraded to dispatch additional firefighters to the scene. Additionally, there are no fire hydrants near the area.

According to Fisher, firefighters spent about three hours extinguishing the fire and conducting restoration work – that is, putting out hidden fires.

Due to the damage, the house was classified as uninhabitable. A damage estimate was not initially available.

Neither residents nor firefighters were injured in the fire, Fisher said.

Fire departments from Newport, Round Lake, Lake Villa, Richmond, Fox Lake, Grayslake, McHenry, Pleasant Prairie and Salem assisted with the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Antioch Fire Department and other emergency agencies.
