Eight weeks of roadworks are set to begin to improve pedestrian and cycling opportunities in a Wiltshire town.

Work will begin on September 2. Wiltshire Council will install a toucan crossing and widen a shared use path on the A346 Salisbury Road in Marlborough.

Temporary four-lane traffic lights and pedestrian diversion routes will be in place for the duration of the work, which will be carried out Monday to Friday between 09:30 and 15:30 (CEST).

Tamara Reay, cabinet member for transport, said the work was part of a “larger project” and would eventually create a traffic-free route from both the east and west of the city.

“While other aspects of the trail remain to be completed, this work is the first step in our longer-term plan to create safe and convenient connections for active travel across Marlborough and is well supported locally,” she said.

The existing shared path on Blenheim Road will be extended to the Toucan junction and continue to a new shared path leading away from Salisbury Road and up the embankment in front of the Tesco car park.

This would enable residents to safely walk, cycle or use a wheelchair to get to school, nearby residential areas, the city centre, Marlborough Business Park and Tesco, the council said.

The work will take about two months. Outside of working hours, traffic should flow as usual.

Ms Reay apologised for any disruption caused during the work.
