Man-made Boulter fire burns 2,300 acres in 24 hours

VERNON, Tooele County — According to Utah Fire Info, a fire that started Saturday, the Boulter Fire, has grown to 2,300 acres in about 24 hours. As of Sunday afternoon, the fire was still zero percent under control.

The fire raged Saturday afternoon near the Tooele and Juab counties border along State Route 36 and was initially reported to be 200 acres in size. By Saturday evening, the area was 3,000 acres and, according to Brian Trick of Utah Fire Info, crews were able to extinguish 700 acres overnight.

The fire was confirmed to be human-caused, but authorities did not provide further details.

SR-36 was closed from mile three to mile eleven Saturday afternoon, but Utah Fire Info said the road was open in both directions Sunday. About 89 firefighters worked to secure portions of the fire perimeter with 18 fire engines, 6 fire trucks, a bulldozer and a Type 3 helicopter.

Trick said the weather forecast for Sunday was much more favorable than Saturday. He said the fire reached a line of juniper trees, which can fuel fires, so crews were paying extra attention Sunday to getting that line of the fire under control.

Parts of Vernon, Eureka and smaller neighborhoods in between were evacuated Saturday. Utah Fire Info said the evacuations were lifted at 1 p.m. Sunday.
