Ron Johnson: Secret Service and FBI are “dragging” investigations into Trump assassination attempt

Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) accused the Secret Service and the FBI of “essentially wasting time” in providing information to solve the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The task force, created shortly after the assassination, has sent letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr., asking the agencies for documents and briefings on the shooting. Johnson, the head of the Senate’s bipartisan investigation into the assassination, was unable to provide any current information and claimed the Secret Service and FBI were taking their time.

“We have received some transcribed interviews, but the documents we are requesting are heavily redacted,” Johnson said on the Fox News show Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo“They’re delivered the day of the interview, so we can’t really use the documents to effectively conduct the interviews. So, from my perspective, we’re not getting anything from the Secret Service or the FBI.”

Johnson also argued that both agencies are stoking suspicion and conspiracy theories by helping with the investigation because “that’s just how you do it.” He added that it was “mind-boggling” that the body of Thomas Matthew Crooks, who has been identified as Trump’s potential assassin, was released for cremation before anyone had seen the autopsy reports.

“This, too, is just about stirring up mistrust and conspiracy theories,” Johnson said.

Republican Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana has said he went to examine Crooks’ body on August 5, but it was not released to Crooks’ family until 10 days after the July 23 shooting. The FBI has said the release of the body was done in coordination with the coroner’s office and state and local law enforcement partners “following standard procedures.”

Johnson added that these agencies do not believe they could face scrutiny from Congress and the public, and that it is up to them to decide what information to release and when.

The task force’s investigation is expected to be completed and a final report released by December 13, with lawmakers expected to release interim reports in between, according to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA).

Meanwhile, House Republicans conducting an independent investigation into Trump’s assassination, led by Reps. Cory Mills (R-FL) and Eli Crane (R-AZ), will hold a “forum” on Monday. The event will be held at the Heritage Foundation headquarters in Washington, DC, and will include three witnesses: Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service special agent; Erik Prince, a former Navy SEAL officer; and Ben Shaffer, a Washington SWAT agent.
