Truck driver charged with manslaughter after crash on I-70 | Mid-Missouri News

The California truck driver who killed two people in Monday’s crash on Interstate 70 has been arrested after being charged with manslaughter.

Walter J. Montejo, 26, was charged with two counts of first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and driving without a license.

Montejo was booked into the Boone County Jail at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Montejo was driving a semi-truck that collided with a U-Haul vehicle near the Business Loop 70 exit on I-70 on Monday afternoon. Cindy Helms, 54, of Tennessee, and Melvina Colin, 84, of Colorado, were in the U-Haul vehicle and died from their injuries in the crash.

Drivers behind Montejo said before the crash that he was driving the Freightliner truck with a trailer in the left lane but failed to maintain the lane and collided with a car in the travel lane, court documents say. The car went out of control and veered off the right side of the road, court documents say.

After hitting the car in the right lane, Montejo’s truck struck the concrete barrier in the middle of the road and crossed it into the oncoming lane, striking an SUV that spun out of control, a RAM pickup that was thrown through the air and rolled over, and a Ford pickup, court records show. Montejo’s truck then struck the U-Haul head-on, court records show. The driver of the RAM was seriously injured, police said.

According to court documents, witnesses told Columbia police that the Montejo was traveling at a high rate of speed in the passing lane at the time of the accident.

According to police, Montejo’s license was revoked under Missouri’s administrative alcohol law.

Montejo suffered moderate injuries in the accident and was in good condition at the hospital Wednesday afternoon, a MU Health Care spokesperson told KOMU 8.
