Florida State beats Georgia Tech with walkoff field goal

Tenth-ranked Florida State lost its season-opening game in Ireland on Saturday to an unranked Georgia Tech team to kick off the 2024 college football season – a season after going undefeated but still missing the playoffs.

The two teams faced each other in Dublin, with the Seminoles looking to prove themselves with a transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei under the middle. Florida State scored easily on its opening drive and successfully completed a two-point conversion.

Benefiting from two possessions, it seemed to coach Mike Norvell had his team ready for a route. Instead, the Yellow Jackets responded and tied the game just minutes later.

With five seconds left in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 21, Tech kicker Aidan Birr scored a crucial 44-yard field goal just before the end of time, breaking some hearts in Tallahassee.

Fans went crazy on web forums and social media.

Technical Quarterback Haynes King completed 11 of 16 passes for 146 yards and gained another 15 yards on the ground. Uiagalelei completed 19 of 27 passes for 193 yards and rushed for seven yards in a disappointing debut, while neither quarterback threw a touchdown.

Florida State hosts Boston College on Sept. 2 and still has a good chance of making the postseason with the expanded 12-team playoffs, barring any more losses. The team faces a big test on Oct. 5 when it hosts Clemson – where Uiagalelei began his career.
