Georgia Tech opens college football season with surprise win over tenth-ranked FSU

College football is back with a bang.

Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Birr kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to give the Yellow Jackets a 24-21 victory over the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland.

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei led a 15-play, 84-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversions to tie the game at 21-21. That would be the last time Florida State had the ball.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King ran 6:33 minutes off the game clock in 12 plays and gave his kicker the chance to win.

Birr missed from 52 metres on the first possession of the second half, but he scored the decisive goal from 41 metres, pushing it just wide of the left goal post.

Florida State came out hot and moved the ball with ease on its opening drive. Lawrance Toafili scored the first touchdown of the 2024 season on a 28-yard run. The Seminoles ran a trick play on the extra point to secure the two-point conversion and take an 8-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets responded with a quick score of their own. Backup quarterback Zach Pyron came in for King on offense at the opposing one-yard line and rushed into the end zone after a QB draw for a touchdown.

King was solid all day for the Yellow Jackets, getting things done with both his arms and legs. He finished the day completing 11 of 16 passes for 146 yards and running the ball 15 times for 54 yards.

Georgia Tech running back Jamal Haynes ran the ball 11 times for 75 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win.

It was FSU’s first loss as a double-digit favorite since 2021.

This is the Seminoles’ second consecutive loss after they were crushed 63-3 by the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl and failed to advance to the College Football Playoffs despite a then-record of 13-0.

The Seminoles will try to right the wrongs at home against Boston College on September 2nd.

Georgia Tech will look to build on its unexpected home win over the Georgia State Panthers on August 31.
