The Flint Hills have been part of the local animal rescue organization’s name for years, and now that Prairie Paws has taken over operations of the Emporia Animal Shelter, the animal rescue organization can now serve a larger area than just Lyon County.

The Humane Society recently held a community meeting to gather feedback on the pet care needs of residents across the region, and Board President Lori DeWinkler says several issues were highlighted.

In addition to community members, representatives from several other local animal welfare groups attended the meeting, including Buffy Animal Welfare and Street Cats Club. Bailey Estes, the local manager of Prairie Paws, also attended.

The Humane Society plans to hold monthly community meetings until further notice and has planned several public events, including the “Bow Wow Basics” dog training series, discounted pet food and straw distributions, and vaccination clinics. The popular dog house building event may also be added back to the community calendar.

Residents with questions about the Humane Society can call 620-342-4477, email [email protected] or find the Humane Society of the Flint Hills on Facebook.
