Brighton 2:1 Manchester United: What Erik ten Hag said

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag spoke to BBC Match of the Day after the defeat: “Although we had to settle for at least a draw, we could have won even if the goal from the incident with Joshua Zirkzee counted.

“It was difficult. At that moment, Zirkzee was sliding. If he had read the situation better, he might have been able to avoid it, but once you’re sliding, there’s nothing you can do. You can’t avoid the ball.”

“It’s tough, but we also created a lot of chances to score a second goal. We showed resilience and fought back. We had our chances to score more goals. It’s disappointing when you don’t win and then you lose.”

On the goal conceded towards the end of the game: “Two easy goals. We need to be more consistent in both penalty areas and play better as a team. It’s a shame that we’re here without any points. We need to get up and prepare for the next big game that lies ahead of us.”

For all incoming transfers: “When we have news, we will appear as a club. You have to look for better (players). We have a chance (in this transfer window), but we have to find the right options. So far we are happy with this squad and we go into the league with this squad.”

On his assessment of the first two results: “We have a lot of potential, but we have to hold out until the end. The game is over when the referee blows his whistle three times. That’s what we didn’t do well (in this game), so we have to improve game management.”
