Save on essential hurricane supplies

As the peak of hurricane season approaches, Florida residents can take advantage of the disaster preparedness sales tax-free period starting today. From August 24 through September 6, residents can purchase essential supplies like generators, batteries and pet supplies sales tax-free, easing the financial burden of preparing for potential storms.

The VAT exemption affects numerous items important for disaster preparedness, including:

  • Portable generators: Priced at $3,000 or less, these devices can be lifesavers during power outages by providing light, communication and food preservation.
  • Tarpaulins and ground anchors: Waterproof tarps and tie-down kits, costing $100 or less, are essential to protecting your property from storm damage.
  • Safety devices: Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers, all for $70 or less, help keep your family safe.
  • Portable power and communication: Portable power banks, radios, and self-powered light sources priced between $40 and $60 will keep you connected and informed in emergencies.
  • Pet Supplies: Essentials like pet food, carriers, and over-the-counter medications ranging in price from $10 to $100 are also included to ensure your four-legged family members are taken care of.

The sales tax exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases as long as the order is placed within the qualifying period. There is no limit to the number of qualifying items you can purchase.
