Lawsuit: Verizon released phone records of alleged stalker victim

A North Carolina woman is suing Verizon Wireless because she says the phone company gave her cell phone number and home address to Robert Glauner, who allegedly stalked her and then showed up at her home one day with a razor blade and a rope in tow.

According to the civil lawsuit filed in federal court in North Carolina, the plaintiff, who identifies herself in the documents only as “MD,” says she met Glauner online in August 2023. She did not give him her real name, but used a pseudonym. Court documents show the two met on xhamster.com, an adult video website, and that she gave Glauner her cellphone number.

They had spoken to each other “for a short time,” she claimed, but when she “felt uncomfortable with Glauner,” she ended the conversation.

MD blocked him on all of her devices, but that did not stop him from contacting her, the complaint says.

She claims Glauner used different numbers to reach her, and when she informed police of the harassment, she was asked to change her number, which she did. Her attorney, Amanda Dure, told NBC affiliate WRAL in North Carolina that from that point on, her client had only “10 days of peace.”

According to the civil complaint, Glauner, who lives in New Mexico, drove to North Carolina to harass her. She claims that after she blocked Glauner, he was able to track her down by posing as a detective from a local police department when he contacted Verizon’s Security Assistance Team.

MD claims Glauner created a fake search warrant for Verizon and told them he needed their phone records as soon as possible. He claims he is Detective “Steven Cooper” of the Cary Police Department, assigned to the department’s homicide unit.

He is said to have told the telephone company that MD was “a woman who was seen at the scene of the murder.”

But this was “completely made up,” says MD.

Not only did Glauner create the fake arrest warrant and pose as a detective, but MD also accused him of falsely signing it as Wake County Judge Gale Adams.

“In reality, Judge Gale M. Adams is a judge of the Superior Court of Cumberland County, North Carolina. On October 18, 2023, Judge Adams was shown the document and she stated that the signature displayed was not hers and that she did not sign it,” the civil complaint states.

The woman claims Verizon gave Glauner her number, phone records, home address and phone logs – including her family’s contact information and numbers. All of this happened within nine days of Verizon allegedly receiving the first fake warrant and solicitation.

Glauner demanded more from Verizon, she says.

He is accused of asking about incoming and outgoing calls, text messages – even GPS coordinates – as well as all the pictures the woman received.

To get these documents, however, Glauner had to up the ante: MD claims that Glauner told the phone company that she was “wanted for murder and wanted to flee U.S. jurisdiction to Puerto Rico.”

The emails, MD said, were sent to Verizon from an unofficial personal Proton Mail account that Glauner had set up.

What followed were more days of harassment over the phone and via text message, and the woman said that at some point even her mother began receiving threatening calls from the New Mexico man.

He told MD’s mother that he would “continue calling her, her friends, her work… I will not stop until she texts me,” the complaint states.

Glauner reportedly said that if MD continued to avoid him, “things weren’t going to get better for him,” and began sending lurid messages to her friends and family, including swearing that they would “come, climb through her bedroom window, and then tie her up and rape her.”

He allegedly told the woman’s family that MD wanted to be his, and not long afterward, according to the woman’s attorney, Glauner even went so far as to call the police and insist that they conduct a welfare check on her at home.

Glauner was en route from New Mexico to North Carolina to Maryland when he was accused of sending her confusing and frightening messages, such as saying he would “pick up a gun for me at Walmart” and then “come to your house.”

When he arrived in Raleigh, Glauner said he threatened to kill her.

“If I can’t have you, nobody who wants to treat me like that can, so f— you,” he reportedly wrote in November 2023.

MD then called the police, who agreed to monitor her property. When Glauner showed up, he parked a block away, got out of his car, and “then made his way toward MD’s home, hiding in a dark area of a neighbor’s yard,” the complaint states.

He was stopped before he could go any further.

According to MD, police found a razor blade on him and in his car were “two new bundles of rope, a glass meth pipe and eight grams of methamphetamine.”

MD is suing Verizon in civil court for violation of the Stored Communications Act, intentional reckless infliction of emotional distress, and negligence. She is seeking at least $75,000 in damages and a jury trial.

She also named Glauner in the civil suit for assault.

Court records reviewed by Law&Crime show that Glauner was charged in January in federal court in North Carolina with stalking and illegal travel with intent to kill, injure or harass.

A North Carolina docket shows he will next appear in court on October 5.

WRAL reported that Glauner had previously been charged with stalking in California.
