Women’s soccer plays goalless draw at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Columbia women’s soccer team opened the 2024 season with a scoreless tie against Hofstra on Friday afternoon.

Columbia applied pressure in the closing minutes on Friday and had several opportunities to shoot at goal, but none of the shots found the back of the net. Gabby Chan tried an attempt at an open look in the 82and Minute, which hit the crossbar. Annie Faraone also came into play late in the game, but Hofstra’s Mackenzie Sullivan took advantage of a save in the 87th minute.th Minute, leaving the game scoreless. Friday’s season-opening tie is the sixth time in the last seven seasons that the Lions have opened the season with a tie.

The Lions finished the day with 10 shots. Columbia’s shots hit the post three times and capitalized on two counterattacks. Chan had three total shots on Friday as she played 61 minutes in her debut for Columbia. As a unit, the Lions had three total shots on goal. Maia Tabion, Angel Akanyirige and Faraone were each credited with one shot on goal. Columbia’s defense held firm, limiting Hofstra to just three shots.

Experienced goalkeeper Lauren Rodriguez started in goal and played the full 90 minutes to secure the scoreless tie. Rodriguez played great in goal, diverting two balls over the net to secure the shutout. Friday was her first start and the most playing time of her career for Columbia, as she looks to be a mainstay in goal for the Lions this season.

The Lions have a week to recover before traveling to Tennessee this weekend. Columbia will face Vanderbilt on Friday, August 30th before the trip ends with a game against Tennessee Tech on Sunday, September 1st.
