Secret service agents suspended after assassination fiasco

The head of the Secret Service field office in Pittsburgh and at least four other agents have reportedly been sidelined amid the ongoing investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last month.

The agents have been placed on leave while the agency’s internal affairs division continues to investigate how a 20-year-old sniper was able to open fire on Trump at his July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, CBS News reported Friday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Among them were a member of Trump’s personal security team and four Secret Service employees from the Pittsburgh field office, including the special agent in charge, Fox News reported. The agents will remain employed but will not be allowed to work on site or conduct investigative work.

Tristan Leavitt, president of Empower Oversight Whistleblowers & Research, wrote on X that the removal “should have happened at least on July 13th – if they hadn’t been placed on investigative leave that same evening.”

“If paid leave is granted, the Secret Service must follow the 2016 law we passed that tells them whether they give up or not, close your investigation and propose a personnel action, or reinstate them to administrative duties. Don’t waste taxpayer money just to give them paid leave,” said Leavitt, whose nonprofit represents high-profile whistleblowers at the IRS and FBI.

The move sparked internal speculation that the Pittsburgh branch was primarily to blame for the security deficiencies, the sources said.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi declined to comment on the agents or any disciplinary action, saying it was a personnel matter.

However, he said the agency’s review was making “progress.”

“The U.S. Secret Service is committed to investigating the decisions and actions of personnel related to the events in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump,” Guglielmi said in a statement to The Post.

“The U.S. Secret Service Mission Assurance review is progressing and we are investigating the processes, procedures and factors that led to this operational failure.”

“The U.S. Secret Service requires our personnel to adhere to the highest professional standards, and any identified and proven violations of policy will be investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility and may result in disciplinary action,” he added.

This comes as the agency continues to face growing pressure to hold people accountable for the catastrophic failures that led to Trump being injured by a suspected assassin’s bullet during the campaign rally.

Secret Service Chief Kimberly Cheatle, who has worked for the agency for 28 years, resigned from her post less than two weeks after the rally.

Her successor, acting director Ronald Rowe, later told MPs he was “ashamed” of the ordeal and vowed to investigate the failings.

Separately, Congress is also investigating the assassination and the Secret Service’s handling of the rally.

A source said Secret Service headquarters officials told agents in charge of the rally not to request additional security measures in their official requests, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) said Friday.

Members of the congressional task force on the Trump assassination attempt are scheduled to visit Butler next week to meet with local officials.

“Today’s decision to place several agents on leave is the agency’s first step toward accountability, but it comes 41 days after the assassination attempt on President Trump – and is far from enough,” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, who convened the task force, said in a statement.

“Because the Secret Service refuses to acknowledge reality and will not be transparent, the bipartisan House Task Force will continue to aggressively and thoroughly investigate the shocking security failures, find answers, and demand accountability,” Johnson added. “The liberal media is working to erase history, and the big tech companies are trying to censor and block those who seek information online, but the American people will NOT forget this tragic day – and neither will the House of Representatives.”
