During the storm Lilian a tree falls through the roof of the house

A Leeds family had a lucky escape when a tree fell through the roof of their house as a result of the strong winds of Storm Lilian.

Rosamund Booth said she had “never gotten out of bed so quickly” when the tree crashed through the ceiling of her bedroom at her home in Roundhay at around 7.15am BST on Friday.

The storm caused destruction and disruption across the UK, with 21,000 homes and businesses in West Yorkshire temporarily without power.

Mrs Booth and her husband Richard said they had previously asked for the trees in the area to be cut down, but Leeds City Council said a “valid application” was required for safety complaints.

Mr Booth said he was “absolutely furious” about a situation he said was “completely” avoidable.

However, a city spokesman said the trees in the area were privately owned and subject to a tree protection ordinance.

“We can only respond to complaints about the safety of a tree if we receive a valid request to carry out work,” they said.

Mrs Booth said they were sleeping “right under the tree” and her granddaughter was also in the house in West Park Grove when it collapsed.

“I jumped out of bed to see if she was okay,” she said.

Mr Booth added: “I was just making myself a cup of tea when suddenly there was a huge bang and a large branch was thrown from the roof, taking the sundeck at the back with it.”

“It was like thunder, like a really loud wind, then it crashed against the ceiling.”

Branches of the tree broke through not only the ceiling of a bedroom, but also the ceiling of a bathroom and destroyed an outdoor balcony.

“There were concerns about whether the house was safe,” Mr Booth said.

He claimed they had asked for the trees on their street to be trimmed or reduced in height in 2021.

Months later, they were reduced by 15%, “which is nothing,” Mr Booth said.

Ms Booth said she was “still in shock”, adding: “We told them this was going to happen but nobody listened.”
