New purple route offers express service from College Way parking lots

LEXINGTON, KY (August 23, 2024) – The University of Kentucky Transportation Services is introducing a new campus bus route this fall, called the “Purple Route.”

The purple route provides a direct connection from the College Way East and West parking lots to the Kroger Field area and provides another travel option for staff and students parking in the College Way parking lots. Individuals can choose to travel on the existing green route buses that travel through Greg Page and Shawneetown, or they can take the purple route.

The purple route will run clockwise from College Way to Alumni Drive to University Drive. Buses will then travel through the interior of the Kroger Field parking lot back to College Way. The entire loop is expected to take approximately 8 to 10 minutes.

Bus stops on the new purple route include College Way North (formerly known as the Fleet Stop), College Way South (formerly Wildcat Court Stop), the blue underpass to the west, and a newly created red stop to the south. See map above.

“The impetus behind the development of the purple route is to provide quick and convenient access from the College Way parking lots to Kroger Field,” said Lance Broeking, director of UK Transportation Services. “This new route will primarily benefit Employee Peripheral (EK), Commuter Peripheral (CK) and Residential Peripheral (RK) permit holders. It coincides with and complements other changes taking place in the Kroger Field parking lots this fall.”

The Purple Line operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, this schedule will be reviewed during the fall 2024 semester to ensure it is the most convenient time frame for riders and will be adjusted accordingly if necessary.

Purple route riders can exit at the blue parking canopy west of Kroger Field or the red parking canopy south and take either a blue-white or orange route bus.

In a related development, the College Way West parking lot will be expanded toward the helipad this summer, creating approximately 72 parking spaces in that area. The College Way East and West parking lots are expected to become more popular parking options due to the expansion and the new bus route.
