British tech giant Mike Lynch among 5 bodies recovered from sunken superyacht

British technology giant Mike Lynch is among five bodies recovered from a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, the Italian coast guard said.

The news came after rescue workers found a fifth body on Thursday. Rescue workers were seen bringing a body bag ashore at the port of Porticello in Italy.

Diving teams have made progress in the search for six people who went missing after a yacht went underwater within minutes on Monday. Rescue workers found four of the bodies on Wednesday when they gained access to the yacht’s hull deep underwater.

Lynch – who was recently acquitted of fraud charges in the US – and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch were among the six missing people.

Also missing were Mike Lynch’s lawyer Chris Morvillo, who represented him in the fraud trial, and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International Bank and insurance company Hiscox, was also missing, along with his wife Judy Bloomer. Jonathan Bloomer most recently served as a defense witness in Lynch’s fraud trial.

After five bodies have now been recovered, the Coast Guard identified the last missing person as a woman. The missing woman is reportedly the tech mogul’s daughter, Hannah Lynch.

Because rescue efforts are so difficult, it is difficult to predict when the last person will be found, officials said.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we can find the next body,” said fire department spokesman Luca Cari, according to AP.

“It is very difficult to move in the wreckage. It can take up to 24 hours to move just one meter,” Cari added.

The yacht sank in a storm early Monday with 22 people on board. Fifteen people were able to escape in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. Civil defense officials believe the yacht was struck by a tornado while over the water, AP reported.

On that day, one person was also found dead. This person was the yacht’s cook, Ricardo Thomas.

The British Marine Accident Investigation Department is launching an investigation into the sinking of the vessel.

Italian authorities said the British investigation was not involved in search, recovery and rescue missions, but would be at some point, as the Bayes yacht involved in the incident was flying a British flag.

Further investigations are needed to determine what caused the incident and why the yacht sank so quickly.
