Women’s lacrosse coach Ricky Fried announces resignation

WASHINGTON- Head coach of the Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team Ricky Fried announced his resignation on Thursday afternoon. Fried leaves the program after 20 years at the helm as the most successful coach in the program’s history.

In his 20 seasons, Fried led the Hoyas to a 196-156 overall record and a 94-31 record in BIG EAST regular season games. In the 2014 season, he became the winningest coach in program history after a 13-6 victory over Temple. Under Fried, Georgetown won seven BIG EAST regular season titles, appeared in the BIG EAST Championship Game seven times, winning in 2010 and 2019, and made the NCAA Tournament nine times, reaching the quarterfinals twice.

Fried coached 23 All-Americans as well as the National Goalie of the Year, two BIG EAST Attackers of the Year, four Midfielders of the Year and five Defensive Players of the Year, along with 110 All-BIG EAST first and second team selections. In addition, he and his team were twice named BIG EAST Staff of the Year.

“I want to thank Lee Reed, Georgetown University and all the people who have supported me over the past 22 years,” Fried said. “I am deeply indebted to all the current and former players for everything they have given to the program on and off the field. And finally, I want to thank all the assistant coaches I have had the pleasure of working with. Any success I have achieved is in large part due to their support and encouragement to improve daily. Words cannot express the appreciation and love I have for each of you. I wish the current team much success this year and in the years to come.”

Lee Reed, athletic director, said, “On behalf of the university, I would like to thank Coach Fried for his contributions to the Hoya women’s lacrosse program and we wish him the best.” The nationwide search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
