Man dies in shooting in south Kansas City near Indian Creek Thursday morning: police

Detectives are trying to determine what led to a shooting that left a man dead in a south Kansas City neighborhood Thursday morning.

Just before 10:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 9500 block of Harrison Street near Indian Creek after a report of shots fired. They found a man near the door of a residence unconscious and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said in a news release.

Officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and took the man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“We have no preliminary information on what led to the shooting and we do not have anyone in custody at this time,” Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokeswoman, said in an email.

Police were collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses on Thursday. Gonzalez said the community was instrumental in helping investigators make progress in identifying a suspect.

The incident is being investigated as a murder case; no further information was immediately available.

According to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings, this killing will be the 90th homicide in Kansas City in 2024. During the same period last year, Kansas City had recorded 126 homicides.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Homicide Unit directly at 816-234-5043 or anonymously to the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS Hotline.
