Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film will offer a different kind of story

There’s probably no one busier in Hollywood right now than Shawn Levy. He just dropped hints about his upcoming Star Wars film on the Deadpool & Wolverine promotional tour.

In Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Levy spoke about his approach to Star Wars.

The most important realization is that he doesn’t want to make a film that has to fit into the Skywalker saga.

“Star Wars movies can only revisit the same part of the timeline so many times,” says Levy.

“I don’t want to make a Star Wars story that’s superfluous to anyone else, and I have no interest in making one that has to serve another movie. I really wanted to create something that felt organic to me, both in tone and in character.”

However, he hints that there is an important Star Wars soul that he wants to preserve.

“I think there’s the power and the connection to something bigger than our individual selves and the way that can empower us,” Levy says. “Those things, combined with visual pleasure and wish fulfillment, that’s Star Wars for me.”

We’ve known for a few years that Shawn Levy is in the running to produce a Star Wars movie; the news leaked via Deadline in 2022.

Since then, Levy’s star has only grown. He continues to direct Stranger Things episodes, and the fifth season of Deadpool & Wolverine was a huge box office success.

At the time of writing, it has grossed $852 million and is expected to hit the billion dollar mark in the next few days, making it only the second R-rated film to reach this milestone, after 2019’s Joker, which grossed $1.078 billion.

Levy has also hinted that he has certain actors in mind for the lead roles in his Star Wars film.

Josh Horowitz, host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, asked Levy if he had any characters in mind when he was writing. He replied, “Sort of, yeah,” before urging him not to ask any more questions.

This is understandable, since the film – if it even makes it to the production stage – will likely not be in theaters for several years.

The next Star Wars film is “The Mandalorian & Grogu” and is scheduled to be released in May 2026. It is directed and co-written by Marvel great Jon Favreau.

Other directors involved in Star Wars film projects include James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Dave Filoni.
