Burglars ram pickup truck into tobacco shop in Chatsworth – accident caught on video

CHATSWORTH, Calif. (KABC) — As dramatic surveillance video shows, thieves drove a pickup truck into a tobacco shop in Chatsworth early Thursday and then looted the store.

The footage shows a white truck backing into the front of Smoke City at 21700 Devonshire Street, near Owensmouth Avenue, around 1:30 a.m., demolishing a metal security gate and shattering the floor-to-ceiling window.

About a dozen suspects – wearing hoodies, beanies and face masks – then ransacked the small store. A camera mounted on the outside of the building filmed the intruders as they ran out of the building and got into another vehicle, an SUV.

According to Los Angeles police, no one was arrested in connection with the crime.

The owner of the tobacco shop, George Touma, expressed his anger and frustration in an interview with ABC7.

According to Los Angeles police, at least eight masked suspects broke into Rich LA on Century Boulevard on Tuesday morning.

Asked if Thursday’s break-in was the first at the store, he said: “No, actually the same store was broken into about three weeks ago. They just broke down the front door and got in. But today was a much bigger break-in than before.”

He said a safe, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cash were stolen in the previous break-in. The total value of the goods stolen on Thursday was unclear.

“When they catch these criminals, they let them go,” Touma said. “It’s as if this state – this beautiful state – is on the side of the criminals instead of the innocent people who work so hard to get by at the end of the day.”

“And it’s literally spiraling out of control. It’s reaching the point where it’s kind of a boiling point.”

Meanwhile, a similar break-in occurred overnight at a cannabis dispensary in North Hollywood. The vehicle that crashed into the business resembled the white SUV used as a getaway car in the Smoke City break-in, but it was unclear whether the same robbers were involved.

LAPD officers responded to the break-in at Swish Pharmacy at 10701 Burbank Boulevard, two blocks west of Cahuenga Boulevard, around 3:30 a.m.

Five suspects fled in another vehicle and were last seen heading west on Burbank Boulevard, police said. The white SUV remained at the scene.
