Find out which sport is best for your child with the new quiz | Other | Sport

Do you think your child has what it takes to be a star athlete? Take this quiz to find out which sport they should try.

The tool asks you a series of personality-based questions to find out which discipline you could succeed in after a summer full of sporting inspiration.

This is based on a study which found that British children are most motivated to take up swimming, football and tennis after a summer of sport.

A survey of 1,000 children aged six to twelve found that 83% would like to start a new sport following the events of the past few months, including the European Championships and Wimbledon.

Of the 76% of young people who watched the Olympics, 79% are now interested in trying something new. In addition, 75% of respondents feel they have more than enough energy to try at least two new sports.

The study was commissioned by the crepe manufacturer Whaoo!, which has also developed a tool that parents can use to find new sports for their children.

A spokesman said: “Children have boundless energy and research has shown that a sport-intensive summer motivates them to try something new.”

“There is no doubt that the Olympic Games can make an impact on young people and motivate them to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.

He added: “But not only that. England’s run to the European Championship final and the elite tennis at Wimbledon will inspire the kids to go out and become the next superstars for this country.”

The survey also found that 83% of parents want their child to try a new sport, 67% said their child has talked about the sporting events they watched this summer, and 52% have seen their children re-enact the sports they saw on TV with their friends.

However, the biggest challenges were seen as the cost of equipment, maintaining their interest and finding time for new activities.

To ensure that their children have enough energy for sporting activities, three quarters of parents make sure that they always have a tasty snack ready.

While 81 percent of children immediately think about what they can eat after running around, 59 percent want something sweet, according to OnePoll data.

It also showed that children were impressed, excited and amazed by what they saw at the Olympics. However, while 45% would prefer team sports, 33% liked the idea of doing something on their own.

Half would prefer to take part in an outdoor sport such as rugby or cycling, compared to 30% who would choose an indoor sport such as gymnastics or martial arts.

Interestingly, 36% thought some sports were for boys only and others for girls only, while 49% disagreed – and one in six were unsure. And of those who believe gender doesn’t matter, 57% were female, compared to 41% male.

A Whaoo! spokesperson added: “The research shows that parents are keen to encourage their children’s new interest in the sports they have watched this summer.

“And quite literally, after all the effort, the children want something to eat immediately after participating. They also said they wanted something sweet to get a much-needed energy boost.”
